Lights, Mother City, the recent showcase of student talent from ACT Cape Town, directed by Tamryn Spiers, was a dazzling
display of the premise on which the internationally accredited training school is based: a commitment to professional

From theatre classics such as Oscar Wilde's, The Importance of Being Earnest and Shakespeare's A Midsummer Nights
Dream to the contemporary love triangle of Patrick Marber's Closer and the insight into a brilliant mathematical mind in
decline in David Auburn's Proof, the students from ACT displayed a fluid versatility and a professional ease in front of the
audience, comprised predominantly of industry leaders. Scenes were artfully selected to stretch the actor's dramatic
capabilities and, whether performing monologues or ensemble pieces, the acting was powerful, engaging and honest.
The success of the showcase is testament to the school's standards of excellence. At ACT, aspiring actors are urged to
realise their dreams by pushing themselves within a safe, supportive environment, while experienced actors are challenged
with refining their skills and developing new ones.
These high standards are echoed in the calibre of coaching talent employed by the school. All teachers are professionals
working within the acting field. Acutely aware of the challenges facing aspiring actors, they support, inspire and train through
ongoing classes, intensive workshops, full time courses, private coaching and seminars presented by leaders in the acting

Established by professional actress Candice van der Hoven in 2005, ACT is based on international training principles. Whilst
working as an actress in New York, Candice discovered that the discipline of acting was deeply instilled throughout the
profession. If actors were not on set, they were in the studio honing their craft; waiting passively for the next casting call was
